MetaMask has finally committed to launching a token.

For a long time, members of the cryptocurrency community, especially those who participated in the early days when MetaMask was the only viable wallet to access Ethereum services, have been anticipating an airdrop from the company.

Many people have given up and turned to other directions; some have even stopped using MetaMask due to encountering many issues. Without any commitment regarding airdrops, it is hard to find motivation to continue using this platform.

However, there is currently a new ray of hope, as Joseph Lubin, the founder of MetaMask's parent company, Consensys, has hinted at the possibility of launching a token in the future for his Web3 protocols, and many hope that their wallet service will be among them.

Lubin's comments inspire hope in the community

Sharplink Gaming (SBET), known as Strategy of ETH, experienced a 75% drop overnight after several cryptocurrency news outlets and KOLs shared an SEC filing, claiming to have sold 100% of their shares.

This has caused investors to panic and led to a decline of about 75% in after-hours trading. However, the reality is that these individuals did not actually sell their shares as the websites suggested, and Lubin was present to clarify the situation.

Lubin also participated in a series of comments from another user, analyzing how users could take advantage of this discount. At that time, someone had requested Lubin to tokenize SBET so that it could be purchased on-chain.

In his response, Lubin expressed optimism and hinted at the potential of SBET as well as many other protocols that will be tokenized. Below that response, a user took the opportunity to ask about the possibility of MetaMask receiving an airdrop.

"You may be tired of this question, but will there ever be a MetaMask token?" the user asked. "Not necessarily a governance token, even a meme token would do. I understand that ensuring fairness is very difficult. The lifespan of the wallet and consistency in usage would be a great indicator for an airdrop."

Lubin's response indicates that there is a "short- and medium-term plan/strategy" being implemented, "including the standardization of our current products and other initiatives."

"Web3 protocols need tokens," he wrote, adding that "the first protocol to launch" will be LINEA and all tokens will "support each other."

Lubin on the next protocol to receive tokens after LINEA

After Lubin revealed that LINEA is the first protocol to receive tokens, some users began speculating about which protocol would receive similar treatment next. One user suggested it would be Infura, but Lubin chimed in to say that the answer to that question is most likely the decentralized infrastructure network (DIN).

"DIN might be the next name. But don't make me do that," he wrote.

Lubin describes DIN as an extension of Infura, viewing it as a signal for the decentralized protocol ecosystem.

"Infura is collaborating with many partners, from major service providers to niche service providers, to help them respond to requests on DIN with acceptable and monitored performance, based on Infura's standards," Lubin wrote. "DIN is a crucial service for MetaMask, helping it to rapidly expand to cover the entire ecosystem of decentralized protocols, because Infura provides the highest performance but only on a few protocols."

Lubin believes that DIN will change the game and empower, as it can enable Web3 to widely own its own infrastructure.

"Imagine if builders and users of Web1 and Web2 could own a tokenized implementation of TCP/IP and HTTP. DIN will enable community ownership of this profound infrastructure," Lubin shared.
