According to a report by IT House on July 21, the relevant local departments in New York are preparing to solve problems such as "dirty and messy" subways. Considering that there are too many fare evasion users and repeated prohibitions, the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced this week that it will use an AI system in the New York subway to track fare evasion passengers. According to foreign media NBC, the MTA has installed the AI system at seven subway stations. The system was developed by the Spanish software company AWAAIT. The MTA plans to expand the system to more stations by the end of this year. AWAAIT said the "real-time analysis system" installed in the subway station will help staff "use more methods" to solve the problem of fare evasion. The company claims the cameras installed above the ticket gates can monitor multiple gates simultaneously with "reasonably high" accuracy. Once a violating passenger is found, an alarm will be issued immediately, so that the staff can quickly rush to the scene to deal with it. The MTA claims that using this technology can effectively solve the $690 million fare evasion problem in current subway operations. However, civil organizations worry that this AI-based identification system may endanger the rights of passengers, and therefore suggest that the MTA should pay more attention to traffic operations instead of focusing on these "details".
