According to PANews news on August 7, according to Cointelegraph, MakerDAO caused controversy because of its decision to block VPN users from accessing its DeFi lending agreement Spark Protocol. The media tried to access the website using a VPN in Australia and Singapore, and received a "VPN access to this website is not allowed" prompt. The measure appears to be related to Maker's attempt to limit access to Spark Protocol for US users (discussed in the Spark Protocol's updated May 9 terms of service), which also warns against using VPNs to circumvent the block.

In an Aug. 6 tweet, DeFi analyst Chris Blec and others said they were "disgusted" by the decision, emphasizing that it effectively banned VPNs across the globe, not just in the United States. "It's one thing to block US residents, it's another to block anyone in the world who uses a VPN for privacy," Blec wrote. "This is a real privacy battle."
