A global law enforcement operation this week took down the notorious Qakbot botnet. Qakbot is a banking Trojan notorious for providing an initial foothold on victim networks for other hackers to buy access and spread their own malware, such as ransomware. U.S. officials say Qakbot has helped facilitate more than 40 ransomware attacks in the past 18 months alone, generating $58 million in ransom payments.

In the law enforcement operation, dubbed Operation Duck Hunt, the FBI and its international partners seized Qakbot's infrastructure across the United States and Europe. The U.S. Department of Justice, which conducted the operation with the FBI, also announced that more than $8.6 million in cryptocurrency was seized from the Qakbot cybercriminal organization, which will soon be provided to victims.
