The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against Russian citizen Ekaterina Zhdanova for laundering money on behalf of Russian elites and transferring funds using virtual currencies.
"Through key facilitators like Zhdanova, Russian elites, ransomware groups, and other illegal actors seek to evade U.S. and international sanctions, especially through the misuse of virtual currencies," said U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Brian E. Nelson. OFAC will continue to focus on protecting the U.S. and international financial systems from those who attempt to take advantage of this technology and other illicit financial risks in the virtual asset ecosystem. ”
