The European Union expands support for AI startups to provide supercomputers for model training

The European Union plans to support homegrown AI startups in model training by providing the processing power of supercomputers. The plan was announced in September last year and began implementation last month. France's Mistral AI is already involved in the early pilot phase. Early experience has shown that the program needs dedicated support for AI startups to train them on how to get the most out of the EU's high-performance computing.

"One of the issues we see is that we need to provide not only access, but also facilities, especially in terms of the skills, knowledge and experience that the colocation centers have, to help AI startups develop training algorithms using the best architecture and computing power," an EU official said at a press conference today. They added that there are plans to establish a "center of excellence" to support the development of specialized AI algorithms that can run on supercomputers in the European Union.
