GMGN co-founder reflects on the past six months: How did a small team make choices?

Seeing this tweet, regarding the question of "choice", a small team is constantly faced with choices because your resources are limited. What you decide to focus on at any given moment determines your fate, so I have some thoughts.

From January to March, during the peak of Trump Coin, a large number of newcomers began to enter the blockchain and chose to use GMGN.

Then some problems arose, the TG account was banned and stolen. A fraudulent GMGN app with the same name appeared in the Apple Store, and we posted a banner warning on the website and filed a complaint with Apple. Users exported their private keys by themselves, and then possibly uploaded them to some cloud service, clicked on a phishing link, or imported them into a fraudulent app. Security issues are becoming increasingly severe.

First multiple-choice question: Should we focus on security or continue with functionalities?

We have chosen security, and the entire team is dedicated to reconstructing a series of security measures, including the account system. We aim to conform to the usage habits of novice users.

This set took more than a month. It sacrificed a bit of user experience, such as the inability to export private keys. It lowered some entry barriers and improved security verification. For example, GMGN now offers multiple login methods: plugin wallet, TG login, Phantom wallet signature login, app QR code login, email login, and biometric login (coming soon). There are also various security measures in place, such as withdrawal whitelist, TG push notifications for whitelist additions, email push notifications, Google two-step verification, and later biometric verification.

Are there any other solutions for these things? No. Security is just like wearing close-fitting underwear, how can we entrust its protection to others?

Is it worth it? After finishing, the daily security inquiries from 5-6 users are reduced to occasional or zero reports.

Second multiple choice question: While ensuring security, based on the internal "roll energy" assessment of the team, what else can be done, is it to support BSC or continue optimizing SOL?

We chose to support BSC. Because at that time we also judged that BSC was about to have a hot market, users would be enthusiastic to use it, and the clear demand was presented here. Could it become the second growth curve?

After completing the BSC, GMGN indeed rode a wave of favorable conditions, and at that time many overseas users also used GMGN to trade BSC, as there were no competing products.

However, what I didn't expect was that the persistence lasted longer than anticipated. However, there are still many issues that need to be optimized in the product, with user feedback coming in every day, and changes need to be made daily. Continuous effort is still required.

Third multiple choice question: Competitors meet the needs of the chain scanning very well, will GMGN follow?

While addressing security and support for BSC, the experience of SOL itself has not kept up with the trend.

The performance issues with GMGN have also hit a bottleneck. Some choices made in the early stages of the startup led to these problems. Should we synchronize the changes, and is it possible to fix them?

If we follow, the product needs a major overhaul. If we don't follow, we just lie back and rely on past achievements. Users might complain a bit but won't complain for long. If we make significant changes, will we risk losing our own identity if users don't accept it? For example, if we lose the original flavor of GMGN, will users migrate elsewhere?

This multiple-choice question seems difficult. But it's not that hard. If you want to do well with GMGN, the choice of answer is obvious.

At that time, many people were talking about various issues with GMGN on Twitter, and some were directly cursing without mentioning the issues. I basically read them all. The cursing continued on Twitter for about half a month. Some of the criticisms were well-founded, and they made me blush; I read them two or three times, and I showed them to my team members. Among those who criticized particularly well, I even contacted them, made phone calls, and listened to their opinions.

What should I do? Keep quiet and reflect, admit my shortcomings, and quickly learn, change, and practice. For a while, I basically didn't post on Twitter. I couldn't post because if I did, I would be criticized. I also couldn't look at it; at first, when I was updating, everyone didn't know what I was doing, and once I updated, the group chat and Twitter were full of insults. We couldn't explain either, because we didn't know what we could achieve. So I just kept doing it under pressure.

The team gets together to ponder over each issue, and if we can't figure it out, I'll go beat the dog. We operate on GMGN to reproduce some problems. Then we let the development team address each issue and make corrections. At the same time, we are doing a major architecture restructuring.

The speed of the SOL website, transaction speed, Windows performance optimization, and various small features and details are constantly improving. Looking at GMGN's 30-day statistics, my account made 2000 trades, played with 500 dogs, and lost money again, but I solved the problem.

The last 2 months have been fulfilling for us, but my mood feels like a roller coaster. We created some things that users didn't appreciate, flattering at the wrong target, causing anxiety. We made some things that users liked, flattering at the right target, which made me feel a bit more comfortable.

Question four: What to do next, and how to choose?

The revolution has not yet succeeded, comrades still need to work hard. There are still many areas to optimize. Keep striving, carve out a path.
